IT Update: Real-Time Translation in Google Meet

Imagine joining a video call with a client across the globe—and understanding each other perfectly, in your own languages, in real time. That’s no longer a futuristic dream. Thanks to the latest update from Google Workspace, powered by Gemini AI, real-time speech translation is now live in Google Meet.

This new feature is a game-changer for companies that rely on seamless communication across languages and borders. Let’s explore what’s new, how it works, and why it matters for your business.

Google has introduced real-time, low-latency speech translation in Google Meet, powered by Gemini AI and DeepMind’s AudioLM. Unlike previous caption-based translations, this new feature translates spoken language directly into audio—preserving the speaker’s voice, tone, and emotional nuance.

“Think simultaneous interpreter, or someone who listens to a speaker while concurrently saying the words in another language,” said Yulie Kwon Kim, VP of Product for Google Workspace in a pre-event briefing, “and then take it to the next level, where the interpreter is not another person’s voice, but the speaker’s own voice”, according to Mashable.

Currently available in English and Spanish, this feature is part of Google’s AI Pro and AI Ultra plans. The AI Pro plan starts at $20/month, while the AI Ultra plan—designed for enterprise users—costs $249.99/month.

With more languages expected soon, it’s designed to make multilingual meetings feel more natural and human, and only one participant in a call needs to be subscribed to the AI plan for everyone to benefit.

Getting started is simple. It’s intuitive, fast, and effective for real-time collaboration. Here’s how to use it:

  1. Open Google Meet on the web.
  1. Click on the “Speech Translation with Gemini” panel.
  1. Select the language you’re speaking and the language you want to hear.
  1. Once enabled, you’ll see a glowing Gemini overlay and a translation indicator on your screen.
  1. During the call, you’ll hear your conversation partner’s voice translated into your chosen language—with a faint version of their original voice in the background for added clarity.

Only one participant needs to be subscribed to the AI Pro or Ultra plan for the feature to work in a group call.

For businesses where tourism, international partnerships, and cultural diversity are part of everyday operations, this feature is a powerful tool. It helps teams collaborate more effectively, improves client communication, and removes the friction of language barriers.

Whether you’re onboarding international staff, supporting multilingual customers, or expanding into new markets, real-time translation in Google Meet can elevate your operations.
