Goodbye Skype: Here’s How to Migrate to Teams

After two decades of connecting people around the world, Skype officially retired on May 5, 2025. If you’ve been using Skype for personal or business communication, you might be wondering: What happens now? Don’t worry—Microsoft Teams is ready to take the baton, and Pacific IT Support is here to help you make the transition smooth and stress-free.

Let’s walk through what this change means, how to move your Skype account to Teams, what happens to your paid Skype features, and how your business can stay connected without missing a beat.

Microsoft is streamlining its communication tools to focus on Microsoft Teams (Free)—a more modern, feature-rich platform that supports everything from video calls and messaging to file sharing and community building. With Teams already serving hundreds of millions of users, it’s become the go-to hub for collaboration at work, school, and home.

If you didn’t migrate before May 5, 2025—good news! You can still move your Skype data to Microsoft Teams Free. Microsoft has made this transition as seamless as possible, so you can keep your conversations going without missing a beat.

Here’s how to make the move:

  1. Download Microsoft Teams (Free) on your device.
  1. Sign in using your Skype credentials—your contacts and chat history will automatically transfer.
  1. You’ll still be able to export or delete your Skype data until January 2026.
  1. If you had Skype Credit, you can continue using it via the Skype Dial Pad in Teams Free.

Once you’re in Teams, you’ll find familiar features like one-on-one and group calls, messaging, and file sharing—plus new tools like calendar integration, meeting hosting, and community spaces.

If you had a Skype Number or Skype Credit, here’s what you need to know:

  • Skype Credit and subscriptions will continue to work until the end of your current billing cycle.
  • Auto-renewals stopped on April 3, 2025.
  • You can still use remaining Skype Credit through the Skype web portal or within Teams Free.
  • Microsoft is no longer offering new paid Skype features to customers.

If you relied on Skype for international calling or business communication, now is the time to explore Teams’ calling options or other VoIP solutions—something Pacific IT Support can help you evaluate and implement.

The retirement of Skype marks the end of an era—but it also opens the door to a more powerful, integrated communication experience with Microsoft Teams.
